Henry Crandall Rosecrans was the 4th son born to Crandall and Jemima
(Hopkins) Rosecrans in Burlington Township (Homer), in Licking
County, Ohio in 1824. In 1847 he volunteered in the Mexican War. His unit was mounted. He served 15 months under General Zachary Taylor. For his service he received a Land Grant in Iowa. On August 22, 1849, Henry Rosecrantz married Elizabeth Dickey who was born October 24, 1823. She was the daughter of Joseph (b 1805) and Catharine Dickey (b. 1806) of Virginia who lived in Burlington Twp., Licking Co., Ohio in 1850. Elizabeth lived with her parents while Henry went west and lists him on the 1850 census record. About 10 days later on September 1, 1849, Henry and his uncle Judge Marmaduke P. Rosecrans left Elizabeth in Ohio and went to Iowa to stake his claim. While the men were in Iowa, gold was found in California so the
men headed west. Finally in 1857, Henry returned to Ohio and
got Elizabeth and moved to Iowa. They are listed in the 1860
census for Franklin in Washington County, Iowa. Also listed in
the census is daughter Menzo Oveda, age 6, and Adrien, age 3, and
Elizabeth's father, Joseph Dickey, age 58. Henry and Elizabeth had 6 children: daughters Ada Nola, Clementia Wellna, and Menza Oveda (b. 1853),and sons Adrien Dickey (b. 1858), William Joseph (b 1861), and Henry Sylvester (b. October1865). There was a Mary born in 1863 in the 1870 census but either she died young or is one of the other girls. |

Elizabeth died May 3, 1913 and is buried
in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lincoln, in Mahaska County, Iowa.
Henry died January 21, 1924. Henry Sylvester Rosecrans married Grace M. Borland (daughter of John C. Borland) who was born in Illinois in January 1865. In 1900 they lived in Oskalooska, Mahaska, Iowa where Henry is a printer. They do not appear to have any children who lived to be adults. Adrian Dickey married Lizette and moved to Globe, Gila County, Arizona, probably with the railroad They had Murial (b 1899), Alice C. (b. 1904) and Erik A. (b. 1908-9). In 1930 Murial is married to Thomas Lacy and they live with her parents. Thomas is a manager at Woolworth, Adrian is an operator for the railroad and Lizette runs a hotel. No mention or Alice or Erik. |
