Safety Rules and Regulations

 

CHAIN OF COMMAND 

Chains of command will be established in both camps and will be followed.  Two overall commanders (One Federal and One Confederate) will be appointed.  Artillery, Infantry, and Cavalry Branch commanders will also be appointed.  Independent soldiers and home guard/militia will be assigned to a unit by the Branch commanding officer.  Federal and Confederate commanders will be available and accessible throughout the event as will event coordinators.  At least one event coordinator will be available at all times.  Event coordinators may be reached at the Town Hall in the Center of the Sunbury Square.  No Officers above the rank of Captain without prior approval of the event coordinators. 

INFANTRY 

Union and Confederate officers shall be responsible for conduct and safety practices of the troops under their charge. 

Weapons and ammunition safety inspections will be conducted by Infantry Branch Commander before every engagement.

     During any battle, skirmish, drill, or tactical

A. No ramrods will be used on the field.

B. All bayonets, bowie, or similar types of knives shall either be tied into the scabbard or left in the camp.

C. No non-period or defective weapons shall be allowed onto the field.

D. All officers and NCO’s may carry their swords.

E. No one under the age of 16 will be allowed to carry a weapon.

ARTILLERY

Union and Confederate officers shall be responsible for conduct and safety practices of the troops under their charge.

National Civil War Artillery Association (www.ncwaa.com) safety rules and procedures will be used by all cannons and crews.

All cannons shall be inspected by the Artillery Branch Commander for safety and general condition of equipment prior to its use in battle, skirmish, drill, or tactical.

Personal firearms and ammunition safety inspections will be conducted by Artillery Branch commander before every engagement.

Due to the size and location of the fields, it is requested that artillery units use minimum charges in their guns.  (i.e. The smallest amount of powder that can be safely fired from your gun.)

No one under the age of 16 will be allowed to carry arms or work on a cannon in any position other than positions 5, 6, or 7 (Powder Runner, Limber Attendant, or Limber Guard).  No one under the age of 14 will be allowed to work positions 5, 6, or 7.

 CAVALRY

Union and Confederate officers shall be responsible for conduct and safety practices of the troops under their charge.  Horses are to be controlled at all times.  The owner of any horse that is deemed to be a danger to itself, to spectators, or to other reenactors will be asked to have the horse removed from participation in the event.

If asked, all horse owners must be able to show proof of “Disease Free.”

      All horses and Cavalry equipment will be inspected by the Cavalry Branch Commanders before every engagement.

 All straw, hay and other animal waste are to be disposed of in the containers made available for that purpose.   
 

 GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS

     GALVANIZATION

      Due to the planned Sunday Afternoon scenario, some units may be asked to galvanize. 

HAND-TO-HAND ENGAGEMENTS 

No hand-to-hand engagements shall be permitted unless such engagements are agreed to and scripted in advance by the affected units and approved by the overall Federal and Confederate Commanders and the Event Coordinators.  The officers whose units are participating in hand-to-hand engagements shall be totally responsible for the safety of such engagements. 

FIRE SITES

Fire sites should have turf removed in such a manner that it can be replaced before leaving on Sunday.  This includes sites in the modern camping area as well as those in the authentic camps.  Your cooperation is requested in helping us clean up the facility.  Fire pits shall be limited to no more than 2 per Company Street.
 

Only firewood provided by the event coordinators or brought in by the reenactors themselves shall be used.  (FORAGING FOR FIREWOOD WILL NOT BE ALLOWED). 

ALCOHOL 

ALL LOCAL PARKS AND SCHOOL GROUNDS ARE DRY.   Open consumption of alcohol will not be tolerated.  Anyone found to be intoxicated will be asked to leave immediately. 

     ALL QUIET HOURS 

There are private residences near the grounds where units will be camping.  Please respect our neighbors as well as those folks camping around you.  After 1:00 a.m. all quiet hours will be enforced in camp.  Anyone found to be disrupting to their neighbors will be asked to leave immediately. 

VIOLATIONS OF ANY OF THE AFOREMENTIONED SAFETY RULES MAY RESULT IN THE IMMEDIATE EXPULSION OF THE OFFENDING INDIVIDUAL OR UNIT.  ALL DECISIONS MADE BY THE OVERALL FEDERAL AND CONFEDERATE COMMANDERS AND/OR THE EVENT COORDINATORS SHALL BE CONSIDERED FINAL.  YOUR COOPERATION IS APPRECIATED IN MAKING THIS A SAFE EVENT.
