Minutes of Meeting Held

Thursday, April 30, 2009

Attending:  Rick Helwig – Chairman, Tom Paul – Vice Chairman, Bill Comisford -Treasurer, Polly Horn, Robert Souder, Suzanne Allen, John and Kathy Beckley, Greg Williams, Dick Logan, Renee McCroskey, Linda Paul, and Joe Heiberger  

Secretary’s Report:  Bill presented the minutes from the meeting of March 26, 2009.  Minutes were approved and accepted. 

Treasurer’s Report:  Polly indicated the bank account has been set up.

Activities:  The following activities were discussed:

Artillery School – April 18^th:  Cancelled. 

School Days in Sunbury – May 15-16:  Slow response to letters sent out to schools.  The plan is to again have 10 to 12 stations similar to those presented at the Sunbury Re-enactment in May, 2008.  Planning for a similar program to the public on Saturday, May 16^th.   Polly will handle press releases to the various newspapers.  A potluck dinner for Friday night. 

Mansfield Artillery Show – May 2-3:  John and Tom to set up the Headquarters.  Tom, Bill, John and Kathy, Rick and Polly plan to attend.

 Ladies Aid Society:  Polly discussed the progress on getting a group of women together to form a “Ladies Aid Society”.  Polly will be trying to get someone to chair this group and get things organized.  Planning to have something ready for the “School Days” program.

 Other Up-Coming Activites:

 ·         May 25: Memorial Day, Rosecrans’ Headquarters, Myers Inn

Unit Impression:  Rick again discussed the need for everyone to come up with their own individual impression (whether it be a soldier or a civilian).  Impression can be a specific individual (i.e. General William S. Rosecrans), a branch of the service (i.e. artillery, cavalry, etc) or other (camp follower, sutler, officer’s wife, etc).

Unit Flag:  Bill will follow-up getting an estimate for the headquarters’ flag.

Rosecrans Memorial:  Tom report on the progress of a memorial to General William S. Rosecrans.  Tom has discussed the project with a foundry in Minnesota.  Possibility of having a model made.

Demos and Public Presentations:  As discussed at the February meeting, the idea of members of the Headquarters providing a public presentation or demo on a subject of the Civil War as a part of our monthly meeting was overwhelming agreed to.  Several ideas brought up by Rick and Bill were discussed.  The following schedule was agreed to:
    ·         April Meeting:             General Rosecrans, Tom Paul
    ·         May Meeting:              US Military of West Point and the Civil War, Dr. Tom Erndt
    ·         June Meeting:              Letters and Diaries of Soldiers and Civilians, Valarie Hamill
    ·         July Meeting:              Headquarters, Rick Helwig
    ·         August Meeting:         Religion, John Beckley
    ·         September Meeting:    Camp Life, Linda Paul
    ·         October Meeting:        Department of the Ohio, Bill Comisford

Other:  Joe discussed a proposal by Krogers to pay the BWAHS $150 to set up sometime during the Farmer’s Market on the Square.  Discussed the possibility of October 3^rd.

 Souders Elementary School has requested a presentation at the school to the 4^th and 5^th graders (2 – 45 minute sessions) for June 2^nd.  They are willing to pay $75.  Tom and Rob to try to put something together.

 Polly will update the website, add to the BWAHS newsletter, and do an announcement for the newspapers. 

A future meeting was set for Thursday, May 28^th.  Bring a friend!
